Decorating Inspiration

by Gayle Giles

It’s not too early to be thinking about that room
you’d like to redo for the holidays. Usually a room
becomes tired and outdated, ready for a face-lift
every four to five years. Many clients aren’t sure
where to begin because the task seems daunting.
There are a number of ways to begin any decorating
project with a small amount of time and effort. I
know you haven’t got a clue where to begin. Let me
give you some ideas where to find your inspiration.

A good first start is to look at magazines. Start a
folder and cut out pictures of rooms that appeal to
you. As you begin to select these photos, you will
begin to notice a common theme. If you plan to
work with a decorator or designer, these photos are
a great place to start.

Photos are not the only source of inspiration. Go
to your closet and look at the colors of the clothes
you wear. Certain colors may stand out. These are
colors that make you feel good and would be ideal
to use in your home décor.

Nature is always a good source for inspiration. The
colors in flowers, trees, rocks, shells, even insects
can help to create a color scheme in a room. The
Japanese use the term Shibui when using nature
for design inspiration.

Still not inspired? Do you own a piece of artwork
that inspires you? If not, visit a museum or art
gallery may help. Art brings color and style to a
room’s decor. The artwork can become the focal
point in your design.
Ceramics, pottery, glass and china can also drive a
color scheme. Maybe you have a very colorful
coffee mug that makes you happy. Use those
colors.

Looking for a real change? Go to a fabric store and
look at all the wonderful designs and textures on
the material. A beautiful print chintz, delicate silk,
maybe a wonderful tapestry will inspire your
design vision.

Last but not least let’s not forget the obvious, the
internet and television. The internet provides a
great resource. Vendors such as pain, wallpaper or
fabric manufacturers have sites that provide many
design ideas. Shop around. In addition, television
has wonderful programming with design for all
budgets.

Go ahead let your creativity inspire your next room
to become your favorite. It is all about you and
creating a home that makes you feel good about
your surroundings.
