Small Changes Create Big Impact

by Gayle Giles

Everyone looks for easy ways to update a tired
space. A fresh coat of paint goes a long way to
freshen and improve the look of a space. There
are other small changes that can make a big
difference and not break the budget.

Lighting is a key element of a well designed
space. Enhance an existing lamp by changing
the shade. Add shades to an existing chandelier
for a totally new look. If you want to spend a
little more, replace existing lamps or
chandeliers for the new look. Candles are an
excellent light source that creates ambiance in
the space. Use them on dining tables, fireplace
mantels and other occasional tables.

In kitchens and bathrooms, change the
hardware. Include the sink faucets in the
update. There are many new and exciting
designs to choose. Add floral arrangements to
your dining table either fresh or silk and bring
the seasons into the space.

An easy way to change a current look is to think
of your existing furnishings and accessories in
a different way. Rearrange accessories. Group
like objects together to create impact. Move a
pretty chair from a living area into a bedroom
to create a reading nook. Change artwork
around to create new interest in public spaces
such as a living or family room. Maybe you
have stored an old treasure in the attic. Take it
down and find a spot to showcase the item.
What was old becomes new again!

Updating window treatments can give new life
to any room. Sometimes, less is more. Take
down heavy drapes and replace them with a
simple valance. The valance can enhance the
window while letting in the light and bringing
the outdoors inside.

Focus on a small area and with a little time and
thought you can bring new life to your living
space. Remember, your space is a reflection of
you and your lifestyle. Create it!
